The Psychotherapy Myth

Isn’t psychotherapy the same as speaking with a friend?

Although it may feel like it, the correct answer is, “No.”

Psychotherapy, also called talk therapy or simply therapy, is the treatment of mental and emotional concerns through the use of psychological techniques. These specialized techniques are designed to encourage communication of conflicts and insight into problems. This process leads to relief of symptoms and changes in behavior, thus improving social and occupational functioning.

Psychotherapy is collaborative in nature. It is a process in which a trained mental health professional continually assesses one’s intellectual, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning while utilizing clinical methods of treatment to facilitate that individual’s personal growth. The extent of one’s recovery is a product of what that individual puts into it. Each individual’s process is different, and every step of the journey is the journey.
